7 Ways to Prep for Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal is one of the most popular minimally invasive cosmetic procedures in the United States, thanks largely to its effectiveness in eliminating unwanted hair in pretty much any area of the body. Still, getting those great results does require a little preparation, and knowing what to do can mean the difference between a great result and a mediocre outcome.
At Starkey Medical Esthetics, Michele Meinhart, FNP, Dr. Euna Lee, FNP-C, and Dr. Amanda White, FP-C. use the most advanced laser hair removal systems for beautiful results in both women and men. Here, she lists seven simple but important steps you should take before your laser session to ensure the best possible results.
1. Limit UV exposure
After a cold, dreary winter, warm sunshine feels great on your skin. But sun exposure means your skin is exposed to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, too. Not only can sun exposure irritate your skin and make it more sensitive during treatment, but if you tan, it might reduce the effectiveness of your treatment, too.
For best results, avoid excess sun exposure for a few weeks before treatment, and apply sunscreen liberally whenever you plan to be outdoors — even on cloudy days. Since tanning beds emit UV rays, too, you’ll need to avoid using them, as well.
2. Be gentle to your skin
Sun exposure isn’t the only skin irritant you may encounter. Many skincare products contain chemicals that can irritate, too. For a week or so before treatment, stop using acid peels, exfoliating scrubs, and any products containing retinoids or other harsh ingredients. Apply gentle moisturizers to protect your skin and pamper it, and drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated.
3. Skip waxing and plucking
Laser hair removal works by heating individual hairs. The heat travels down the hair to the follicle, damaging the follicle so it stops producing hair.
Waxing and plucking remove hair down to its roots, which means the laser doesn’t have the hair to act as a heat conduit. For best results, stop plucking and waxing for four to six weeks before your laser treatment session.
4. Shave the day before
Shaving makes it easier for the laser to “see” and target individual hair follicles, which is critical to the success of your treatment. Since shaving can cause minor irritation, you should shave the day before treatment to lower the risk of irritation during your laser session.
5. Skip lotions and perfumes the day of treatment
On your treatment day, take a shower and keep your skin clean and “naked” — free from moisturizers or other lotions and products that could interfere with the laser’s ability to effectively target your hair follicles. That includes deodorants and antiperspirants if you’re having your underarms treated.
6. Wear loose clothing
Depending on what area is being treated, it’s a good idea to spend a little time planning your outfit for treatment day, too. Since laser hair removal can make your skin extra sensitive, it’s best to avoid tight clothing or clothing that might rub or irritate your skin. Instead, opt for loose-fitting clothing made of breathable materials to reduce any post-treatment discomfort.
7. Avoid caffeine on treatment day
Caffeine dilates your blood vessels, potentially increasing skin sensitivity and making treatment less comfortable. It’s important to stay hydrated, but avoid coffee, tea, energy drinks, sodas, and other beverages (or foods) with caffeine until after your treatment session.
